First Shakespeare and Company — commemorative plaque

Here in 1919, Sylvia Beach, an American from Baltimore, opened the very first Shakespeare and Company. Thanks to a small shop pointed out by Adrienne Monnier, she created a lending library specializing in English books. André Gide, Valéry Larbaud, Ernest Hemingway, and James Joyce became regulars. In 1921, success prompted her to move to 12 rue de l'Odéon.
