In May 1921, Sylvia Beach moved her Shakespeare and Company bookshop here, across from Adrienne Monnier's Maison des Amis des Livres. Here she published James Joyce's Ulysses in 1922 when all other publishers refused. The shop became the gathering place for the Lost Generation: Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Pound, T.S. Eliot. It closed in 1941 when Sylvia refused to sell her last copy of Finnegans Wake to a German officer.
