Émile Zola (1840-1902) moved into this townhouse in 1889. On January 12, 1898, he wrote 'J'accuse', his famous open letter published in L'Aurore in defense of Captain Dreyfus, becoming one of the founding acts of intellectual engagement. He died here on September 29, 1902, asphyxiated by fumes from a blocked chimney.
